. . . and in France



As a showdown with Iraq approaches, the French and the Germans have outdone themselves in displays of anti-American and anti-war rhetoric. But even this is not without its comic moments. A friend reported that on CNN recently Jacques Chirac, the French president, said: “All war means failure”—to which she added immediately, “Well, for the French, that’s true.”
