It is something of a paradox that the same press should now have brought out this bulky anthology of translated Greek and Latin verse with all its sins on its head. Chaucer is allowed to describe the subject of the Aeneid as “the armes and also the man.” Should not Rome’s founder for decency’s sake have been surgeoned into an androgyne?
