An Interview with Dore Ashton

by Rebecca Munro

Dore Ashton is one of the few remaining art critics with firsthand knowledge of the birth of the abstract expressionist era.  With a Master of Fine Arts from Harvard University, Ashton has contributed to many publications and written and edited several books on the artists of this period, many of whom she knew personally.  Her writing is unique in that she was able to not only chronicle the evolution of artistic style, but also remain a trusted companion to many artists of the period.

In his interview for Hyperallergic, TNC’s James Panero sits down with Dore Ashton to discuss art criticism, the so-called “art bubble,” and Ashton’s controversy with Robert Motherwell’s Dedalus Foundation.
