The cycle of cartoon violence

by Stefan Beck

No, I’m not talking about Tom and Jerry or even Andy and "Pet." I’m talking about a "growing international row" (to borrow a phrase from Reuters) about the publication in several European newspapers of cartoons depicting the prophet Mohammed. (Islam forbids these such images.) Here’s what a "row" looks like in the year 2006:

On Thursday, a dozen Palestinian gunmen surrounded European Union offices in the Gaza Strip demanding an apology for the Danish cartoons, one of which showed Islam’s founder wearing a bomb-shaped turban.

Afghanistan has condemned the publication of the caricatures and about 400 Islamic students set fire to French and Danish flags in protest in the city of Multan in central Pakistan.

Well, what’s a little flag-burning among friends?

At any rate, I realized while reading accounts of the "row" that the Jews have been missing this party for--I’d say years, but that’s understating things a bit. To limit ourselves to recent examples: these cartoons seem to me more than a little row-worthy. These, too. And these. All I can say about it is, for being bent on exterminating the Jews and establishing a global Muslim caliphate, these guys sure are sensitive. (I bet they hate Mondays, too.)
