The answer is, I hope, celebrating with Stefan, Roger, WFB, Laura Ingraham, Peter Robinson, Mark Steyn (keynote speaker), Father Rutler (emcee), hundreds of revelers young and old, me, and even my dear mother at the twenty-fifth anniversary gala for The Dartmouth Review--a black tie, big band affair at the Union League Club. You can read about the event and buy tickets online here. (I’ve also written a little more about it here.)
Permit me to beat the drum for a moment for this wonderful event, which is near and dear to me for innumerable reasons. For one, the gala will mark the official release of The Dartmouth Review Pleads Innocent, the Review anthology Stefan and I have been slaving over for months and months. Gala goers will be the first to glimpse this contribution to the history of the conservative movement, with copies for everyone in attendance.
Then there is the newspaper itself, a non-profit enterprise for which this gala will benefit everything from paying the rent in Hanover, NH to getting issues to press. A little goes a long way with this volunteer student organization that has been uniquely powerful in changing the terms of debate at Dartmouth college, serving as a model for the countless followers at other schools, and, ahem, training a young generation of journalists. How do you think Stefan and I cut our teeth? That’s right, as swashbuckling editors of the Review. It is for this reason that I now serve on the Review’s volunteer board of trustees and make my way up to Hanover for meetings every few months--to visit what’s become a hatchery for interns for The New Criterion (Nick, Courtnee, Stefan, and, once upon a time, yours truly). Look at it this way--by supporting the Review, you’re really supporting the next generation of New Critters. Huzzah!
So if you are in New York next Friday, get the tux pressed and join us at the Union League Club for what will truly be a memorable evening.
