About ArmaVirumque ( AHR-mah wih-ROOM-kweh) In the Aeneid, the Roman poet Virgil sang of "arms and a man" (Arma virumque cano). Month in and month out, The New Criterion expounds with great clarity and wit on the art, culture, and political controversies of our times. With postings of reviews, essays, links, recs, and news, Armavirumque seeks to continue this mission in accordance with the timetable of the digital age. Recent posts

Feb 24, 2005 01:40 PM The Youngest Friend of The New Criterion by Stefan Beck
Last night, parishioners, friends, and guests of The City Church, New York, enjoyed a lecture by Roger Kimball called "The Perils of Benevolence: Reflections on Political Correctness." After the talk, an audience member asked--as the father of a college student--what practical advice Roger could offer to counter the ill effects of an ugly academic climate. Roger pointed out that the best thing to do is speak up--after all, it is every parent’s duty as an informal "quality control" to weigh in on how his or her money is spent. Of course, speaking up to one’s children, as a teacher, is every bit as important . . . which is why we tip our hats to Kevin and Lesley Kane, the proud parents of Molly Kane, who--in attendance last night--now has the distinction of being the youngest of the Young Friends. (One day she can look at this picture and remember when she was "knee-high to a religion pamphlet.") Speaking of Young Friends, Molly wasn’t able to make our Tuesday event at Chez Panero . . . were you? A good way to keep up to date is to sign up for our mailing list.
