About ArmaVirumque

( AHR-mah wih-ROOM-kweh)

In the Aeneid, the Roman poet Virgil sang of "arms and a man" (Arma virumque cano). Month in and month out, The New Criterion expounds with great clarity and wit on the art, culture, and political controversies of our times. With postings of reviews, essays, links, recs, and news, Armavirumque seeks to continue this mission in accordance with the timetable of the digital age.

Isn’t George Galloway on the ’Do Not Fly List’?

by James Panero

Heck, I thought the UK deported Galloway back to Egypt with the rest of the clerics. Silly me! Rather, the treasonous MP is coming to New York instead to debate The Hitch. This is one cage match I surely plan to see. Here are the details:

Wednesday, September 14, 7:00 PM
A debate between George Galloway and Christopher Hitchens
on Iraq and U.S. and British foreign policy.

Moderated by Amy Goodman

Mason Hall at the Baruch College Performing Arts Center
17 Lexington Ave., enter on 23rd St.
New York, NY
more info here

Lest we forget what Galloway said to Hitchens before the MP’s turn in Capitol Hill last May
"You’re a drink-soaked former Trotskyist popinjay," Mr Galloway informed him. "Your hands are shaking. You badly need another drink," he added later, ignoring Mr Hitchens’s questions and staring intently ahead. "And you’re a drink-soaked ..." Eventually Mr Hitchens gave up. "You’re a real thug, aren’t you?" he hissed, stalking away.
Oh, I hope Hitchens drinks Galloway for lunch.

UPDATE: Roger Kimball, Stefan Beck, and I will all be at the debate. Will you? Be sure to get your tickets now. This is one bout that won’t be on Pay-Per-View.
FURTHER UPDATE: Just heard from the box office: The grumble rumble is SOLD OUT!
