Alumni constitution defeated!

by James Panero

In a huge victory for alumni independence, despite a broad campaign waged by the school and its left-liberal trustees, Dartmouth alumni have voted against a rewrite of the college’s constitution designed to hinder the ability of libertarian and conservative petition candidates to be elected to the Dartmouth board. The office of Dartmouth Alumni Relations reports:

The proposed new constitution for the Association of Alumni of Dartmouth College failed to achieve the level of support necessary for passage in voting by Dartmouth alumni that ended October 31. A total of 12,729 alumni (51 percent) rejected the proposal, while 12,041 (49 percent) voted to accept it. None of the four proposed petition amendments to the current Association constitution received more than 53 percent approval. Approval by two-thirds of alumni voting was required to pass any constitutional amendments.

Thirty-eight percent of eligible alumni participated in the vote. The 24,834 ballots cast represent a record number of voters in any Dartmouth alumni election. All Dartmouth alumni, both undergraduate and graduate, are members of the Association. Those who voted cast their ballots online and by telephone and mail.
