A few items for the calendar

On Wednesday, November 29, join Hilton Kramer, Michael J. Lewis, Karen Wilkin, and myself for a panel discussion at the New York Studio School on twenty five years of art criticism in The New Criterion. Part of the discussion will undoubtedly revolve around Hilton’s new anthology The Triumph of Modernism, which was reviewed yesterday in the Washington Times, and our latest December art issue. We hope to have advance copies of the issue by the time of the discussion. This event, part of the school’s evening lecture series, starts at 6:30 and is free and open to the public. The address of the school is 8 West 8th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues. Here is the school’s website with complete information. Two days earlier, on Monday, November 27 (that’s the Monday after Thanksgiving weekend), as a member of the National Arts Club’s literary committee, I will play host to New Republic art critic Jed Perl for a discussion of his book New Art City, which I reviewed earlier this year for National Review. You don’t have to be a National Arts Club member to attend these literary events, so come on by and get to know what I consider to be the best little club in Manhattan. The talk starts at 8pm at 15 Gramercy Park South--that’s 20th Street between Park Avenue South and 3rd Avenue. The following Saturday, December 2, at 4pm, The Montclair Art Museum (in Montclair, New Jersey) will play host to a panel discussion on George Inness that I don’t intend to miss. This museum has an excellent collection of Innesses, thanks in part to a gift by the collector Frank Martucci, who will participate in the discussion along with Michael Quick, editor of the George Inness Catalogue Raisonne.
