Lass die heilgen Parabolen,
Lass die frommen Hypothesen—
Suche die verdammten Fragen
Ohne Umschweif uns zu lösen.

Warum schleppt sich bluten, elend,
Unter Kreuzlast der Gerechte,
Während glücklich als ein Sieger
Trabt auf hohem Ross der Schlechte?

Woran liegt die Schuld? Ist etwa
Unser Herr nicht ganz allmächtig?
Oder treibt er selbst den Unfug?
Ach, das wäre niederträchtig.

Also fragen wir beständig,
Bis man uns mit einer Handvoll
Erde endlich stopft die Mäuler—
Aber ist das eine Antwort?

Enough with all the parables,
With all the pious speculations,
No more beating about the bush—
Let's have straight answers to our questions.

Why does the just man, bleeding, wretched,
Stagger under a heavy cross,
While triumphantly the wicked
Ride around on their high horse?

Who's to blame? Maybe our Lord
Is not all that omnipotent.
Or He's the one responsible?
Well, wouldn't that be a rotten trick!

So we keep on, quizzing life,
Until at last our time's run out
And our mouths are stopped with earth.
But what kind of answer's that?
