Ebereschen—noch nicht ganz rot
von jenem Farbton, wo sie sich entwickeln
zu Nachglut, Vogelbeere, Herbst und Tod.
bereschen—noch etwas fahl,
doch siehe schon zu einem Strauá gebunden
ankündigend halbtief die Abschiedsstunden:
vielleicht nie mehr, vielleicht dies letzte Mal.
Ebereschen—dies Jar und Jahre immerzu
in fahlen Tönen erst und dann in roten
gefärbt, gefüllt, gereift, zu Gott geboten—
wo aber fülltest, färbtest, reiftest du—?
Mountain ash—not yet entirely red
from that shade, which they develop
to afterglow, bird-berry, autumn and death.
Mountain ash—still slightly pale
but see it already bunched in a struggle
announcing, half-dark, the swan-song hour:
perhaps never again, perhaps once more.
Mountain ash—this year and forever,
in pale tones first and then in red,
colored, filled out, matured, offered to God—
but where do you color, fill out, mature?
