In this issue, for the fourth year running, we present a
special section on art. Overseen by James Panero (about whom
more in the next note), our December issues have become an
opportunity for The New Criterion to step back and add to
its usual coverage of art a passel of articles on some
of the larger issues bedeviling (and illuminating) the art
world today. In the past, readers have responded warmly to
these more concentrated overviews of the art world as they
have to our special sections on poetry, overseen by David
Yezzi (about whom, too, see below), in April. This year, we
think, we have an especially vigorous group of essays: we
hope you agree!
